    Hello Graziano,

I’ve just read about the Replicant project and am already very exited! Seems like a great job, and in order to help boosting your project’s popularity and activity, I wonder if you would be interested in porting this version to run on WM8505 based 7″ Android tablets ? I’ll have a look hopefully sunday, cause I have a full planned agenda till sunday midday/evening. I’m not sure, but I might need some help with running the OS off a tablet. Please visit my website and if you are interested in the ROMs you can register, other parts of the site are open to public. Hope to receive an email of you somewhere this week! Have a good day.

    cheers,

    Stephan

  3. admin says:

Hello Stephan and thank you for your interest in Replicant.

I am not a developer, I am the community guy who tries to bridge actual developers with community, users, contributors, etc.
We are interested in running Replicant on tablets too.
It would be awesome if you could join us so we can discuss together about this.
Join our IRC channel and/or mailing list and contact us.

This way you will reach actual developers and we can start working on this.

    Cheers

    Dear Replicant team.

I am sending this message on behalf of Gizmo For You as the Moderator and owner of the group.

In the “Supported Devices” you have listed one of our Gizmos which is the FLOW (current version G1.55). Please be informed that the current version is no longer in need of assembly and comes with Android 2.2 pre-installed. I would very much appreciate it if you could change your website information about our Open source device so that it reflects its current status.

    Tnx in advance.

  8. i have Dell XD35 …would like to have free andriod os with root access..with other software of linux…Do let me know if how can i backup and check this new os.

  9. PaulK says:

Dell XD35 isn’t a phone we support on the Replicant Project. Apparently, it’s not supported by CyanogenMod (the Android derivate Replicant is based on) either so you have very poor chances of getting an Android version with root on it.

  10. ANDRE Ani says:

    Very good project !
It’s a good thing to have a free Android (I have a Acer Liquid).
I’ve made a little post on my blog to talk about you ;-)

  11. zabeeb anwar says:

my phone is nokia n900.iam really interested in replicant. Is it possible to install replicant on ma phone. Please help me to install it.

  12. PaulK says:

We do not support N900 on the Replicant project, though there is a project called NITDroid (that includes non-free parts) that has Android running with most things working.
    See http://nitdroid.com/index.php?title=Main_Page

Maybe in the future we could eventually integrate a fully free NITDroid fork to Replicant…

  13. Coenie says:

    Thank you for your work.
I’m not a developer yet, but would like to liberate my communication. Which Nexus S exactly do I need to purchase: http://www.gsmarena.com/results.php3?sQuickSearch=yes&sName=nexus+s
And how difficult is it to flash the images? I have succeeded in flashing custom CWM and CM 7 and use the F-droid app, but I want to step up freedom.

  14. PaulK says:

Well, Replicant runs on any GSM Nexus S as far as I know. Note that we do not support the CDMA models, or “Nexus S 4G”.

A standard Nexus S (I9020) should work as well as a I9023 (that I use). I think one already tested Replicant on I9020A and it works the same, though I’m not 100% sure.

  15. PaulK says:

And flashing Replicant on Nexus S is easy, it’s really hard to do it wrong. Plus you can get real time help on IRC.

  16. anielngl says:

I just found about you, great work!
I have an Acer Iconia A500 tablet, I wish I’ll be able to install Replicant too one day…

  17. PaulK says:

Our next target will most likely be the Galaxy S, sorry.

  18. Kevin Clay says:

    Hello,

I just read about what you all are doing and would like to help in any way I can. I have some very low level programming skills in many different languages. I am highly skilled in solving hard problems with creative solutions, things like figuring out why a driver is not working or what the problem is behind not being able to use a certain modem. I can also debug code and concatenate code so that it runs faster and better. Please send me an email so that I can help you better.

    Thanks

  19. PaulK says:

Wow, thanks a lot for your enthusiasm! There is a lot of work to do, so you could decided yourself how to help depending on which device/version you prefer to work on.

I encourage you to take contact with us, on IRC or via our mailing list.

  20. farvardin says:

    Hello,

I think the Zenithink tablet could have the potential for being good candidates for Replicant: they are sold rooted, I guess the bootloader is not locked, they are rather cheap (150 euros for 10″ capacitive screen, Arm A9 processor, RJ45 adapter), with a good hardware. There are frequent updates for the OS (Android 4 ICS) from the vendor. Maybe they would be interested to help because a free Android tablet would raise the attention of many geeks. Besides, I think it’s one of their model which is used on the KDE tablet (spark)

  21. PaulK says:

Thanks for the hint, that sounds interesting!

  22. Itubal says:

  24. Ayb says:

    Hi,
U did great work And am surprised and want to know more about the project I have questions but to not abuse your kindness I will ask just one can u make it turn into a Pc with a specific configuration as a native os?
    Thank you !

  25. PaulK says:

Replicant does not target PCs currently, but focuses on phones. Though, there is the android-x86 project and we could probably mix both to get a fully free Android system running on x86 architectures. That’s not our priority at all for now and as there I am currently the only active dev, it’s not likely to be there soon.

  26. Vavooon says:

Hello. Please check your wiki for errors. http://redmine.replicant.us/projects/replicant/wiki#Building-Replicant
Can you tell how difficult is porting to the Acer Liquid E?

  27. Alberto says:

Please, there is a 404 error with specific instructions for install Replicant: http://redmine.replicant.us/projects/replicant/wiki/NexusSInstallation

  28. PaulK says:

That’s because the page isn’t created yet. It’s pretty much like a reminder to create it but I agree that it can be confusing.

  29. ACcurrent says:

Will this project at some point support some 100% free hardware too?

  30. PaulK says:

We encourage the development of hardware for which the specifications and code are released (so-called free hardware) even though it’s not the very same case as free software and both shouldn’t get confused.

The GTA04 project is an example of what you might call “free hardware” and we are currently working to add support for it.
Though, bear in mind that there are very few, nearly none, examples of real 100% “free hardware” devices: there will likely always remain embedded micro-controllers for which the source wasn’t released, etc.
QI-Hardware is doing good in the way of providing the free-est hardware though.

  31. TatuA says:

I wanted to improve the Replicant logo a bit and here’s the slightly more androidesque result with two different colour schemes:
I reserve no rights for my hasty artwork, so feel free to use it if you want to!

  32. PaulK says:

Thanks for the contribution. We recieved many logo proposals during the past months. Maybe we should list them up on our wiki :)

  33. Is there any change that Samsung Galaxy 5 will be supported ?

There is a very active community over at madteam.co
and a very active developer psyke83 who has made cyanogenmod possible for this device including ice cream sandwich

  34. OObernOOb says:

    Hi !

It is an excellent thing you are doing here. :)

What I cannot find is a comment on versions of supported devices. For example, the Galaxy S. There is a Galaxy S II and III as well, and probably different versions of these for different markets. My question is which ones are covered by Replicant ? I think it would be helpful if you wrote a small comment on this type of thing in the articles of each device you support. A simple comment like “we have not tested this against version xxx but we think it should work” is better than nothing.

  35. PaulK says:

Thanks! Well, when we say we support the Galaxy S, that means we support what Samsung calls the Galaxy S: The I9000 device, GSM version and not anything else. That means we currently don’t support the S2 Nor the S3 (though support for the S2 is upcoming with Replicant 4.0). Though you are right to point that out: for instance on the Nexus S, there is the I9020, the I9023, the I9020A, etc. All are supported and were tested with Replicant, though we didn’t make note of it anywhere. We’ll try to clear things out next time we add support for a new device.

  36. Hi all
it would be very important to have the images of Replicant for androidx86
    thanks

  37. PaulK says:

Replicant targets phones primarily. Even though a x86 port seems doable, this is not the direction we’re heading towards and we don’t have enough man power to support both architectures.

  38. SergioS says:

    Hello Replicant team,
I’m a MSc student in “free software” doing a report about Replicant. I would like to do a little interview to one or two members of the project. Is somebody of your team interested in doing this interview? In that case please, may you contact me by email? It just consists in some general questions answered by email, it does not take more than 15 minutes.
    Thanks a lot

  39. John Carpenter says:

I see that you currently support the HTC Magic phone. I can buy the HTC G2 Magic for very reasonable prices on Ebay. I’m assuming the “G2″ is an upgraded model. Do you foresee any problems getting replicant to run on this phone?

If it will not work, what do you feel is the best android phone that you support? Thanks for Replicant!

  40. PaulK says:

HTC Magic is a bad choice for many reasons: it has a bad hardware design that gives the modem too much power over the main CPU, runs an old Android version (2.2) and Replicant 2.2 is not supported anymore and is not even guaranteed to work at all. Another cheap target is the Galaxy S, you might want to look into it.

  41. gwong says:

    Hello Replicant team,
I want buy a new phone which can run Replicant android, is there any suggestions?
What new devices are you going to support?

  42. PaulK says:

The newest phones we support are the Galaxy Nexus and the Galaxy S2. Perhaps Galaxy S3 will be supported too in the future.

  43. leae89 says:

    Replicant souds great!
Want it for my Samsung Galaxy Young.
